Define measurable service requirements
Specify temperature range, load, impact, exposure to sunlight or chemicals, dimensional needs and expected lifespan. Include regulatory or food-contact requirements if applicable. Separate must-have properties from desirable features so trade-offs are transparent.
Match resin grade to the process
Injection molding, extrusion, blow molding and other processes impose different flow and thermal requirements. Read the supplier’s technical data sheet and confirm test methods and conditions. Processing windows, drying requirements and additives can change the outcome even when base polymers match.
Validate the whole-life trade-off
Evaluate part quality, scrap, cycle time, sourcing stability and end-of-life options in addition to resin cost. Prototype and test under realistic conditions before full-scale adoption. Consult technical specialists for safety-critical and regulated applications.
Practical checklist
- Write measurable performance and compliance requirements.
- Compare grade-specific technical data and processing fit.
- Prototype and test before commercial-scale substitution.
