Measure the actual bottleneck
Map how material moves from input through production, inspection and dispatch. Compare scheduled versus actual operating time, first-pass yield and work in progress. Watch the constrained process rather than assuming the newest or most expensive machine is responsible for lost capacity.
Reduce preventable variation
Standard operating instructions, calibrated instruments, preventive maintenance and operator feedback help reduce inconsistent outputs. Separate one-off incidents from repeated failure modes. Prioritize problems by safety risk, frequency and economic impact, and validate process changes before rolling them out.
Pilot changes and confirm the gain
Introduce one controlled change at a time where practical, recording baseline conditions and results. Evaluate output, defects, energy consumption and operator workload together. A change that raises speed while increasing defects or safety risk is not an efficiency improvement.
Practical checklist
- Record downtime reasons and first-pass yield.
- Prioritize the constraint with the highest impact.
- Test one change and verify quality and safety outcomes.
